Wood chisels for joinery, fitting and mortise work
A wood chisel pares, chops and cleans up joints where a machine cannot reach: mortises, hinge and lock recesses, tenon shoulders and the last half millimetre of a scribed fit. Blade widths here run from 6 mm for hinge work up to 40 mm for wide housings, and most joiners carry a spread of sizes rather than a single one.
Handle and hoop decide how hard you can hit it. A rubber-gripped handle with a struck cap takes mallet blows all day and stays comfortable in a cold hand, while a bare handle is meant for hand pressure and paring only. Steel quality shows in edge retention rather than in the first cut: a good blade comes back to a keen edge on a stone in a minute and holds it through a run of mortises.
Wood chisels sit within the wider chisels and crowbars range, next to the cold chisel used on masonry and steel, which is ground to a blunter angle and should never be taken to timber.
